Governors

The Role of Our Governors

At Merton Bank Primary School, our Governing Body plays a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of the school and ensuring that every child receives the very best education we can provide.

Governors work in close partnership with the Headteacher and senior leaders, offering both support and appropriate challenge. Their role is not to be involved in the day-to-day running of the school, but to focus on the bigger picture—ensuring clarity of vision, ambition and accountability across all aspects of school life.

The core responsibilities of our governors are to:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
Governors work with leaders to define and uphold our shared values of respect, caring, resilience, empathy and courage, ensuring these are lived and experienced by every member of our school community.
  • Hold leaders to account for the educational performance of the school
Through regular meetings, visits and the scrutiny of information, governors carefully monitor the quality of education, pupil outcomes and the effectiveness of leadership. They ask challenging questions and seek assurance that all children—including those who are disadvantaged or have SEND—are supported to achieve their full potential.
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and ensure value for money
Governors ensure that school resources are used effectively and strategically to have the greatest possible impact on pupils’ learning, development and well-being.
  • Ensure safeguarding and statutory duties are met
Governors take their responsibility for safeguarding extremely seriously. They ensure robust systems and processes are in place so that all children are safe, protected and well cared for.

Our governors come from a range of professional backgrounds and bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their role. They regularly visit the school, speak with staff and pupils, and see first-hand the work taking place. This helps them to understand the school’s strengths, identify priorities for development and contribute meaningfully to ongoing school improvement.

Above all, our Governing Body is committed to ensuring that Merton Bank Primary School continues its transformational journey—providing an inclusive, ambitious and nurturing environment where every child can thrive and succeed.
